Pilates mat classes are the most challenging because it is practiced without any of the equipment Joseph Pilates created. To feel the proper engagement of muscle groups and body movement on your own without any assistance is difficult. Over time with continuous practice, your body begins to develop small muscles to help assist larger muscles. Thus, the exercises become fluid and controlled.
In a Pilates mat class, props are used for activating specific muscle groups and adding variation to a classical movement. But the props are tools for you to perform the movement as close to perfection as possible. You will be either lying on your back or stomach or side of your body. The majority of the hour class will be conducted on the floor.
The intensity of the workout will depend on your level of effort. Modifications are made for specific injuries or restrictions in the body. Everyone is welcome. However, if you have never taken a mat class before it is recommended to take at least 4 privates sessions with an instructor. This is to ensure that fundamental concepts and basic understanding of Pilates is established before entering a class.
