  • Joseph Pilates developed a technique to engage primarily the abdominal muscles for his series of exercises. Pilates called his exercises "Contrology". Joseph and his wife Clara immigrated to New York City from Germany in 1926. Pilates became famous for his remarkable ability to rehabilitate injured dancers. Not only did they return to dance but returned stronger with more vigor. Joseph Pilates’ work began to spread beyond New York City, through the proliferation of his students. They continued his legacy by teaching his philosophy and technique.

Today, Pilates is one the most popular forms of exercise worldwide and because of its amazing benefits, Pilates is in great demand. Unfortunately, Joseph Pilates did not live to see the impact and magnitude of his work. He passed away in 1967 at the youthful age of 87.
